A number of small resolutions and ordinances are on the agenda for the June 15 meeting of the Westlake City Council, but one large item stands out: the budget.
Much of the last year has been spent to make sure the city’s investment in the West Trace development begins to produce revenue for the city, and now that the fiscal year is nearing its end, the budget is of utmost importance for a number of reasons.
First, the nationwide and worldwide economies are in a crunch. Although there is an extensive stimulus package in the works, belts are tightening everywhere, including Westlake.
Earlier this month, the mayor passed Resolution No. 2913 as an act of good faith to the economy, ensuring that all stimulus funds awarded to Westlake will serve to improve the U.S. economy by supporting American industries and employing American workers.
Second, the city-owned Augusta Village subdivision began selling lots two months ago and has kept up in pace since, bringing in much-needed dollars that have seemed to only trickle out during the long construction efforts. City officials are excited about new properties and new people coming to the city, but one more hurdle has yet to be passed: the golf course opening.
At a special meeting immediately following the agenda meeting on Monday, council members approved a change order to begin construction on restrooms for the National Golf Club of Louisiana, slated to open in August, discussed bids for signage, and approved construction to improve drainage on the course.
Council members are currently reviewing the budget prepared by the city attorney and will discuss adopting it next week.
“Because of the current state of the economy, our budget will be what we call “bare bones,” Cupit said.
“We hope that things improve soon, but we will do all we can to make sure we cover all of the necessities and make as few cuts as possible, but realistic as well. Revenue from the gas sale program we got approved last summer will soon start coming in, and we will see returns from continuing subdivision sales and again after the opening of the golf-course.”
The council will meet again next Monday, June 15 at 5:30 p.m.
