The Westlake Rams and Lady Rams basketball teams will hit the road today to take on Crowley in District 4-3A action. Game times are slated for the Lady Rams to take on the Ladies at 6:15 p.m. and the Rams and Gents taking the floor at 7:30 p.m.
The Lady Rams (13-12, 3-4) are looking to put together a string of wins after picking up a big 61-59 victory against Northwest on Friday.
Even though Westlake defeated the Ladies (6-15, 1-6) in the game held in Westlake, Lady Rams' head coach Gloria Fontenot says this road game will be tough.
"Hopefully the girls are focused enough to get a game plan together for Crowley," said Fontenot. "I think this game is going to be harder to win."
Last Friday's win helped the Lady Rams climb back into the race for second in district, but will need some help along with taking care of the business ahead of them.
"Everything has to fall just right for us to get up there," Fontenot said. "Of course we have to win out, but we are going to take it one game at a time.
"That was a big win (against Northwest). It gives us a little bit of hope that we can get a chance to get back in it."
Sophomore Kylie Goodeaux continues to lead Westlake in scoring with 14.6 points per game in District 4-3A play. In addition to Goodeaux, Maya Tunwar has been contributing on offense while playing consistently good defense. Tunwar has averaged near double-double figures (9ppg, 10.5 rebounds per game) in district.
Other games in the district include: Church Point @ Iowa and Eunice @ Northwest.
The Rams will have a tough task on their hands when they take on the District 4-3A leading Crowley Gents.
The No. 10 Gents handed Westlake a 67-26 loss on January 15th.
"We have to cut down on the turnovers and play more under control," said Rams' head coach Doug Morris on the improvements Westlake needs to make. "Easier said than done, but they (Crowley) are a good basketball team."
Since the loss of center Gareth McConathy on January 12th, Morris has had to depend on players off the bench to make up for a big part of his offense and defense.
"That's hard to make up," said Morris. "If there were somebody on my bench that could do that, they'd already be playing."
Without his big man on the post, Zak Cahee has taken the reigns and has led the Rams. The senior guard currently averages 13.3 points per game in district play.
"He was one of my man players anyway, so he's had to step up his game," Morris said. "He certainly has and has gotten better.
"We still have a ways to go with five and a half games left. I think with the way we've played Friday night against Northwest and keep playing hard and trying to get better with continuity with who we got, we can start winning some games here at the end."
Other games in the district include: Church Point @ No. 11 Iowa and Eunice @ Northwest.
