The last time the Westlake Lady Rams took on the Northwest Lady Raiders, the game ended in a 34-point loss but they will be looking for redemption this time.
"It is a big game for us," Lady Rams head coach Gloria Fontenot said. "No. 1, they blew us out by 30.
"We started off strong but made mistakes and turned the ball over and they took off with it in the third quarter. It was one of our worst games that we played. We lost a little bit on that. It hurt us pride wise. The other reason is that they are No. 1 in the district. We need this week to see if we can get back in there and place in district. It is not going to be easy."
Game time is set for 6 p.m.
Northwest is currently second in district after losing to Church Point 50-47 on Tuesday. Church Point leads District 4-3A with a 5-1 record and 15-14 overall. Northwest is 16-9 and 4-2 in district.
While the Lady Rams (12-12, 2-4) are one of the smaller teams in the district, Fontenot hopes they can use they speed to wear down the Lady Raiders and get them into foul trouble.
"We are the smallest team it the district and they are the biggest in the district," Fontenot said. "We are going to have to really play smart.
"We are going to have to get them into foul trouble. We are at a disadvantage because we are outsized but we have more speed and we like to run more than most of the teams. We have to try and box out. You have to get in there and fight."
Slowing down the Lady Rams this season has been turnovers.
"If we want to run the floor for four quarters we need to take care of the ball," Fontenot said. "With 30-40 turnovers a game you will not win a ball game. We are in the games but we just beat ourselves on turnovers. Their (Northwest) press game gave us a lot of problems. We have to look at that pressure and get it past half court and set up the offense."
Sophomore guard Kylie Goodeaux leads the Lady Rams in scoring in district with 12.1ppg. Westlake has had several players with big games but Fontenot would like to see it all happen in one game.
"Goodeaux averages nine shots a game," Fontenot said. "We told her prior to district that she need to come out.
"We told her that we are a better offensive team when she is shooting and she is starting do that now.
“We can't just rely on her. Brittany Johnson had 14 against Church Point. Emily Dickerson had 18 against Crowley. If I can get them to all show up one night we will be ok."
