On Tuesday, January 24th, the 2012 season of Poetry Out Loud begins with the first tier of the recitation competition at Central Library in Lake Charles at 6 p.m.
This will mark Poetry Out Loud’s sixth year as an innovative arts education program that has revolutionized poetry’s role in high schools across the nation. At the Lake Charles library competition, students will compete for the chance to continue on to the next tier of competition at the regional competition at the Central School Theatre on February 17th.
Poetry Out Loud was initiated by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation to yield a program that would challenge high school students to study and memorize poetry in a competitive setting while building public speaking skills, confidence, and character. During the competition, the students recite poems on stage and utilize oratory and theatrical elements to enhance their performances of both centuries-old and contemporary poetry.
Erica McCreedy, Projects Coordinator at the Arts Council, stated, “Last year the Louisiana State Champion, David Douglas, came from Lake Charles and represented Southwest Louisiana at the National Competition in Washington, D.C. We want to continue the momentum and keep poetry alive in the classroom.”
Students who are interested in competing at the library competition or schools that wish to host their own competition are urged to contact the Arts Council as soon as possible. For more information about Poetry Out Loud or February’s regional competition, call the Arts Council office at 439-ARTS or visit www.artsandhumanitiesswla.org.
