As students begin planning how they will slow down and relax over their summer breaks from school, signs of progress are in full swing everywhere else. The City of Westlake’s investment into Augusta Village is beginning to pay off after about 22 years of planning through three major hurricanes and an ice storm.

Mayor Daniel Cupit announced at Monday’s city council agenda meeting that the first sale was recorded on Friday, May 8, with the 2nd sale following just hours after. There are 19 lots still under contract.

Next week’s full meeting of the council will see council members introduce a resolution to support companies within the United States when it comes to buying materials, goods and services for projects funded by economic recovery plans.

On request from the Department of Environmental Quality, Ordinance no. 788 will also be introduced. It establishes a drinking water protection critical area around each water well serving active public water systems, which will safeguard the health, safety and welfare of the public by protecting groundwater from contamination.

Also, by next week the council will have three final choices for the National Golf Club of Louisiana logo and will begin to formulate the 2009-2010 budget for the City of Westlake.

Because of the current state of the economy, our budget will be what we call “bare bones,” Cupit said.

“We hope that things improve soon, but we will do all we can to make sure we cover all of the necessities and make as few cuts as possible, but realistic as well. Revenue from the gas sale program we got approved last summer will soon start coming in, and we will see returns from continuing subdivision sales and again after the opening of the golf-course.”
