A dominating performance by Westlake's junior pitcher Maggie Bradshaw led the Westlake Lady Rams to a 3-0 victory over the DeQuincy Lady Tigers on Monday in Westlake.
Bradshaw pitched her first no-hitter of the season while sitting down a season-high 12 batters on strikeouts.
"She's just been working hard," said Lady Rams' head coach Jessica Provost. "Today just proved how hard she is working. She walked four batters and came back, and that's what she will do. Just when you think she's nervous, she comes back and brings it again."
The Lady Rams (2-1) struck early in the first inning when Kasha Carpenter led off the inning with a triple to left. Carpenter came home on a wild pitch by DeQuincy's Rayleigh Templet to give Westlake an early 1-0 lead.
That score stood for the next four innings while Bradshaw allowed only two Lady Tigers (1-2) on base on walks.
Westlake added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Anna Jagneaux started things off for the Lady Rams with an infield single. Bradshaw followed by reaching base on a fielder's interference to set up runners at first and second with no outs. After a sacrifice bunt by Jase Johnson, Kaily Glover hit an infield single on the third baseline to score Jagneaux to give the Lady Rams a 2-0 lead.
Westlake added one more run in the sixth when Emily Dickerson scored on a DeQuincy error to seal the 3-0 victory.
The Lady Tigers tried to make things interesting in the top of the seventh. DeQuincy drew two straight walks, but Bradshaw sat down the next three batters for the win.
Carpenter led the Lady Rams at the plate going 2-for-4 with a triple while Glover picked up the lone RBI while going 1-for-3.
Bradshaw finished the game with only four walks while improving to 2-1 on the year.
"We can only get better," Provost said on the Lady Rams' effort. "We have to start it on defense and we stepped it up today. I was proud of them."
Templet pitched seven innings for DeQuincy while giving up seven hits and only one earned run with five strikeouts.
Westlake will return to action on Wednesday at Cecilia before heading to the St. Amant tournament this weekend.
