Uncharacteristic mistakes early proved costly for the No. 9 Westlake Lady Rams in a 10-0 quarterfinal loss to the No. 1 Buckeye Lady Panthers on Friday at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
“It just seemed like everything went wrong,” said Westlake head coach Jessica Provost. “They were so nervous and they looked so scared. I don’t even know who that team was out there.”
Mikayla Brown led off the game for Buckeye with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, Lacie Nugent hit a double down the line to score Brown for a one-run lead. Nugent took third on a steal and scored on a Westlake error.
“We had a plan that if we got anybody on base it was worth taking the chance,” said Buckeye head coach Darlene Wiley. “That’s why we took the chance on the steal, bunt steal. We had to try to make a habit to get on top for my pitcher.”
The Lady Panthers’ freshman starter Kelsea Wallace was able to keep the Westlake bats off balance all night with the Lady Rams’ best scoring chance coming in the third.
Jase Johnson hit a one-out single to right and Kasha Carpenter followed with her second hit of the night to put runners on at first and second with one out. Wallace got out of the jam by striking out the next two batters to end the inning.
Wallace retired 12 consecutive batters to end the game for the win.
“They couldn’t get their hits going,” said Wiley. “They are a very sound defensive team too and we just won.”
Bradshaw was able to keep the Lady Rams in the game until Buckeye erupted for eight runs on no outs in the top of the seventh.
“She did what she’s supposed to do,” Provost said on her junior pitcher. “I think they hit the ball. I knew they were No. 1 for a reason. They are good and they can hit the ball.
“We knocked them out last year and I knew they were hungry for us.”
Friday night’s game was the last for four Lady Ram seniors. Seniors Hali and Heidi Corley, Emily Dickerson, and score keeper Catherine Johnson will be graduated in the next month.
“My seniors are just amazing,” stated Provost. “They are definitely going to be missed. It’s sad to lose them. They have the right attitude and all of them are going to go very far in life and I will be able to say that I was apart of that.”
