Lake Charles, La. -

Westlake and Sulphur both entered Wednesday’s seventh place game in the Cameron State Bank Holiday Hoops Invitational looking to end extended slides. But the Tors were the one that ended their losing streak with a 73-32 win.

“We played well,” Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. “Coming in, I the only thing that I was concerned about was how hard they were going to play.

“They definitely played hard today. It was a good game for us. We needed a good victory to get back on track.”

Sulphur ended their three game losing streak, while the Rams’ increased to five.

The game was close in the first quarter with the Tors holding onto a slim 11-8 with 3:30 remaining in the quarter.

But the Rams’ shooting went cold as they went 0-for-10 over the next eight minutes. The Tors on the other hand went on a 15-0 run to take a 26-8 lead with 4:04 left in the first half.

The Rams (6-10) next basket would not come until 3:38 left in the second quarter on a shot in the lane by Gareth McConathy.

“It was called we couldn’t put the ball in the hole,” Westlake head coach Doug Morris said. “I don’t know how many open shots in the lane that we had.

“We are going to have to work on holding on to the ball. That is what has been hurting us.”

The Tors (10-6) put an exclamation point on the lead late in the second with two rim rattling dunks by Chip Armelin. The first was a solo but the second came on a ally-oop from Matt LeBato with 31 seconds left in the first half to give Sulphur a 37-12 lead. Armelin finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Sulphur didn’t let up in the third quarter as LeBato scored nine of his game high 22 points including two three-pointers.

By the fourth quarter, Sulphur cleared the bench and got some solid production. The Tors got at least two points from the entire lineup and a total of 20 points from the bench. Dustin Dees scored six points in the fourth quarter coming off the bench.

Donovan Landry led Sulphur in rebounding with eight and scored six points. Aaron Cupit had six points, four rebounds and six assists.

Sulphur kept their turnovers to a minimum in the game with just 5 and went 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

McConathy led Westlake with 15 points and Dylan Abbot finished with eight points.

The Tors will look to get another winning streak going starting on Monday when they host the Sulphur High School Holiday Classic. The tournament will run through Wednesday and will include St. Louis, Bonnabel, H.L. Bourgeois, Chalmette, Dulles, Texas, LaGrange and Pickering.

Note: Sulphur point guard Tanner Kuykendall injured his left knee while going for a layup with 5:15 left in the first half and did not return. Kuykendall had four points, five rebounds and three assists before leaving the game.
