Melody Smith and Colby Thibodeaux were among 12 individuals to qualify for regionals at the District 5-2A track meet in Welsh on Wednesday.

Smith took first in the girls’ high jump with mark of 4’8” and Thibodeaux won the district shot put championship with a throw of 43’1”.

“We have a small team,” said Vinton head track coach Wendell Lejeune. “The kids ran hard on a good day to run. The wind wasn’t as bad as we thought it was. And we had several personal bests.

“I think they all did a great job going into regionals on Tuesday.”

Smith tied a season best in the high jump while Thibodeaux’s winning throw was his second personal best. Crystal Prince threw a personal best in the javelin with a mark of 104’ 4” to qualify for the regional meet.

Chris Sterling ran personal best in the 100M (11.54) and 200M (23.15) to finish second place in both races. Andre Riggins qualified for regionals in the 800M with a third place finish and personal best of 2:19.28. And Michael Pickett qualified for regionals with a second place effort in the high jump, his highest finish of the season.

“He had only been running it for two or three track meets, so he did a good job there,” Lejeune said on Riggins’ effort.

The Welsh boys’ and girls’ teams sweep the district team titles with Kinder finishing second in both standings.

Dreylin Bias took outstanding field honors with his efforts in the javelin, long jump, and triple jump. Kenneth Hawkins won the outstanding track while sweeping the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M races.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the regional meet that will take place on Tuesday at East Beauregard High School.
