People facing a DWI or drug charge in the city of Sulphur now can be included in the District Attorney's pre-trial diversion program, after a joint services agreement was signed at a special meeting of the City Council Wednesday night.
Pre-trial diversion is a long standing program provided by the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's office that gives first time DWI and some drug offenders a chance to avoid court by agreeing to a monitoring program and after agreeing to get help.
"This will only be by a case by case basis," Mayor Chris Duncan said Wednesday.
The City of Sulphur will be receiving a fee of $150 back for each offender referred to the District Attorney's office. That money will be kept in a special fund to offset anything dealing with the court, Duncan said.
In other Council news:
The Council agreed to have a $25 deposit fee on humane traps or boxes that would be used to capture feral or nuisance animals. The Council also agreed to define feral animals as "those animals having been domesticated and have reverted to a wild, natural state."
