Early Sunday morning, according to Texas officials, a major crash involving a truck tractor semi-trailer and passenger vehicle occurred on Interstate 10 near Hamshire Road in Jefferson County, Texas. The 18-wheeler was transporting the hazardous chemical Isobutane. The Texas Department of Public Safety and Jefferson County Emergency Management personnel immediately closed both lanes of Interstate 10 and evacuated nearby residents.
As of Monday, the cleanup continues on Interstate 10 near Hamshire Road. U.S. Environmental Services, the HazMat team in charge of the cleanup, has been working diligently to off-load the chemical from the wrecked tanker onto another tanker. The process of off-loading the hazardous material has been moving slowly and the clean-up could possibly last until Wednesday morning.
The Texas Department of Transportation has established detours as follows:
•Eastbound: IH-10 eastbound to Hwy 124 North to Beaumont or Highway 73 to IH-10 East in Orange, Texas
•Westbound: US Highway 90 to State Highway 61 to IH-10 westbound.
