Leesville, La. -

After getting a wake up call in a wild first quarter, the No. 4 Sulphur Tors were able to pick up a 77-63 non-district win over the Leesville Wampus Cats on Tuesday in Leesville.

The Wampus Cats drained five three-pointers as they scored 27 points in the first quarter to take a five-point lead.

“Those 27 points were a wake up call,” Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. “They (Leesville) came out hot and hit five three on us and we dug ourselves a hole.

“We were not ready to play. I figured it would happen when you play out of district and play a team that is not as strong as in district.”

The Tors (23-5) went to a man-to-man defense in the second quarter and held Leesville (3-17) to eight points.  Sulphur scored 20 points in the second quarter to take a 42-35 lead at halftime.

Chip Armelin led four Tors in double figures with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Matt LeBato and Tanner Kuykendall had 13 points each and Aaron Cupit added 11 points.

Levander Liggins led Leesville with 23 points and Reggie Smith added 15 points.

Sulphur will return to District 3-5A action on Friday when they host Barbe.
