After hardly a drop of ran in nearly a month, a torrential downpour halted the first game of a doubleheader between the American Legion Post 179 Drillers and the Post 1 Jaxx-Blue in the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday.
Post 179 will play Post 1 Jaxx-Orange today at 6 p.m. in Sulphur as regularly scheduled unless the field is still too wet from Monday’s rain storm. A reschedule date for the Drillers’ doubleheader with the Jaxx-Blue has not been set as of press time.
Post 179 (7-2) was down 4-1 with one out in the bottom of the fifth with a runner on third when the game was stopped.
The Drillers took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Brently Sorgee in the bottom of the second but the Jaxx (8-0) rocked Post 179’s Tyler McDonald for six hits and four runs in the top of the third inning.
Post 1 got five consecutive hits starting with a double to the right field fence by Matt Gallier. Darrien Bartie followed with an RBI single and designated hitter Collin Todd hit a two-run double to left field with one out. Trent Helms hit an RBI single between first and second with two outs before McDonald struck out Mason Thigpin to limit the Driller’ deficit to 4-1.
McDonald allowed just one base runner over the next two innings and then drew a walk to start off the fifth inning. But after pinch runner Devin Shaheen stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Tanner Theriot, the game was stopped when the rain and lightning became too severe.
Post 1’s Anthony Ferrer was working on a one-hitter when play was stopped.
McDonald allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings of work with three strikeouts and no walks.
