The American Legion Post 179 Sulphur Drillers are gearing up for the W.B. Williams Post 1 Southwest Sub-Regional Tournament to be played this weekend at Legion Field.
The Drillers (8-2) will begin the tournament on Friday with a 1 p.m. game against first place finisher Delhomme Drillers.
“We are ready to play,” said Drillers manager Robert Henson. “It’s been over a week since we have played so we are looking forward to it.”
Henson will be looking for some strong pitching performances in the sub-regional tournament because the games are slated for nine innings.
“It’s going to be a test to play in the nine inning games,” said Henson.
Tyler McDonald is scheduled to start for Post 179 in Friday’s contest against Delhomme.
However, the Drillers bats have been hot often this summer. Henson will be looking for more of the same performances from Blake Rhodes and Jacob Theriot who have both been productive at the plate this year.
“We have definitely been hitting the ball well,” Henson said on the offensive production. “We feel confident going into the tournament and hopefully it continues.”
Sulphur finished second in their American Legion district behind the undefeated St. Louis Jaxx-Blue (11-0). St. Louis will play in the nightcap game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. against the OGE Rebels.
This weekend’s sub-regional tournament includes eight teams in a double-elimination format.
