Despite blustery conditions, the Sulphur Tor golf team picked up their second team title of the season with a win at their own Golden Tor Invitational at Frasch Park Golf Course in Sulphur.

It is the Tors’ third top-two finish in four tournaments this year. They were coming off a second place finish in the Barbe tournament on Thursday at Pine Shadows Golf Course.

Freshman Sutton Farmer won the Tors first top individual honor of the season and the first of his career. Farmer finished tied with Hahnville’s James Sierra with a 74 but won on a scorecard playoff.

Farmer had a big save on the Par-3 No. 9. He hit his tie shot a little long and to the right of the green and into a sand trap. After chipping onto the green, he made a long put that slammed off the back of the cup and in for a par.

“The course was in great shape and it was great golfing conditions,” Farmer said. “I was pretty consistent. No. 9 was my best save of the day.”

The Tors beat the field of eight teams despite having six freshmen out of eight players.

“We played in the Teurlings tournament in Lafayette and came out first this year which was kind of a surprise to us,” Sulphur golf head coach Keith Farmer said, “We have eight members on the team and we have six freshmen one junior and one senior.

“We are very excited with the results so far. They did well. Of course any time you have a home field advantage it helps. We had some kids step up with some good scores. Chase Gabriel, the last guy came in with a 77 and that really pushed us over the top.”

In addition Sutton’s 74 and Gabriel’s 77, the Tors got a 76 from junior Jack Clyde, an 82 from senior Craig LaFleur and an 81 from freshman Gabe Coleman.

Also for Sulphur Devin Fontenot and Chase Lafleur played unattached and turned in scores of 82 and 99 respectively.

The Tors edged Barbe’s A team for the team title by three points with a team score of 309. Hahnville took third with a 314 and Barbe’s B team placed fifth with a 316.

On the girls’ side, St. Thomas More took top team and individual honors.

STM finished with a team total of 172 to beat Barbe’s 183.

STM’s Hannah Schorr finished with a 79 took take home the individual title.
