For the second year in a row the District 2-5A defending champion Sulphur High Tors will be looking for another starting quarterback. Although lacking any varsity experience this years candidates are not lacking in skills. This year’s group includes senior Logan Nezat, junior Garrett McCain and sophomore Chase Hebert.
Sulphur High head coach Paul Bourgeois said that so far, this year’s quarterbacks have not had any problems with what has been put before them.
“They have been a very good group to work with and have been very accepting of what we have given them,” Bourgeois said. “I feel like they have a long ways to go.
“It is a big difference on Friday night. JV is one thing, freshmen is another, but Friday night is a whole other deal. They just need experience and we are going to have to be patient. They may not look as good as we want them to on the first couple of Friday nights but I think with their attitudes they are going to continue to work hard and improve.”
Using their traditional option offense, the Tors plan to have a balanced offense with more than enough targets for when it comes to passing.
“We are looking at a balanced offense this year,” Bourgeois said. “The kids are going to have to do both of them (running and passing).
“Right now I am not adjusting play calling on who is in there and who is not.”
Leading the pack are Nezat and McCain. McCain is known more for his arm and Nezat for his running ability but since last season both have improved in both running and passing and are now so evenly match that Bourgeois said that they are looking at using both quarterbacks when the season starts.
“It is making a good battle,” Bourgeois said. “I think that they are both doing very well.
“They are supporting each other. If it keeps going like this, we could see more passing and a two-quarterback rotation until one actually clearly takes over the spot.
Rotating two quarterbacks is something that Bourgeois said has not happened very often in his coaching career.
“I have not done it very much in my coaching career,” Bourgeois said. “Usually what happens with both being athletes is that we find another position for one of them.
“At this time they are both doing very well. If there are injuries you need to have the other one ready. That is more less what we are contemplating right now; having two of them ready to go.”
Having a left handed quarterback like McCain will be something that does not happen often at Sulphur High.
“I have not coached a left hander in a long time but he (McCain) throws the ball really well,” Bourgeois said. “We have some good threats with him in throwing the ball.
“He has been working on his running ability and running the option which is a Sulphur tradition. If he is in there he is not just going to be throwing.”
All though he has put together several big running plays in the option, Bourgeois is most impressed with the improved throwing ability of Nezat.
“Logan does a great job reading the option and has had some big plays in games,” Bourgeois said. “The thing that I am most impressed with Logan is how well that he has improved his throwing.
“He has given us another option with his throwing ability becoming a lot better.”
The third quarterback on Sulphur’s varsity roster this season is Hebert. Though just a sophomore, Hebert is very similar to former Sulphur High quarterback Ben Bourgeois as both were hard nosed runners when it came to getting the extra yard.
“Chase is doing really good,” Bourgeois said. “He has a lot to offer at quarterback.
“He is a physical kid playing at quarterback. When he has to run the ball it is not a problem for him to tuck his head and lower his shoulder and gain a few extra yards for a first down. He likes that part of the game. I am not say that they other quarterbacks are not tough, it is just that Chase tends like it a little bit more. It is an asset to the game especially when you need to get two yards. I am not saying that the other quarterbacks are not tough, it is just that Chase tends to like it a little bit more.”
Being just a sophomore means that the learning curve for Hebert will be something that will take time.
“Right now it is the move to the next level and all the different reads and routes but he is slowly coming around,” Bourgeois said. “I think that it is going to be a situation that he will be right there with them on Friday night before it is all over with.”
