The Sulphur High Tor soccer team picked up their first district win Tuesday night in dramatic fashion winning 5-4 in penalty kicks over rival Barbe Bucs at home.
80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes were not enough to determine a winner in the two and a half hour marathon.
It was the second consecutive double overtime game for the Tors after falling 3-2 in the final minutes against Acadiana on Friday.
Sulphur went first in the penalty kicks with Brandon Kieffer putting his shot in the right side of the net. Gabriel Zahm scored on Barbe’s first PK.
The Tors caught a break in the second round when Zach Stone’s shot was high over the cross bar after Ryan Smith made his. GT Bonin gave the Tors a 3-1 lead but Matthew Stewart missed just to the right on the Tors fourth PK.
Barbe made their next two PKs and the Tors picked up one on their fifth try by Brett Manuel to make it 4-4.
Chris Benton put his shot in the left side of the next on the Tors sixth PK try that turned out to be the game winner.
In his first season on varsity and first time in goal for penalty kicks, sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Heffernan sealed the win for the Tors when he stopped the Bucs sixth PK attempt by Phillippe Dupont to end the game.
“It his first year of varsity and only a sophomore,” Sulphur assistant coach Trevor Foolkes said. “We continue to expect good things from him.
“It is hard to practice it because it is all nerves.”
The Tors controlled the final 26 minutes of regulation as they put seven shots on goal and held the Bucs to just two shots but just could not wrap up the game in regulation.
Anthony Frederick had a header go over the top of the goal in the 54th minute and Barbe keeper Kevin Wiese stopped two shots by Brandon Harper and Ryan Smith in the final three minutes of regulation.
The Tors were able to maintain their attacks on offense in the final minutes of the game despite being without one of their leading goal scorers.
Junior Will Hassien left the game with seven minutes remaining after picking up his second yellow card of the game.
“Like I said the other day we do not have anybody that is a superstar,” Foolkes said. “We just have a lot of good players that play good together. If we lose one or sub out we have other guys that can play.”
Barbe out shot the Tors in both overtimes.
“We knew they played Acadiana tough on Friday night and they were pumped up,” Barbe head coach Curtis Stewart said. “The first half we played them well and we were one touch away.
“Once you go to PKs it is anybody’s game. We did well in overtime and had a couple of counters.”
The Tors will have just two days to prepare for the next game because their Friday home game against St. Thomas More has been moved up to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday in Sulphur.
Notes: The Tors picked up six yellow cards in the game to just one for Barbe.
