Sulphur, La. -

For the Sulphur Lady Tors, they are currently a half-game out of second place behind the LaGrange Lady Gators and would like to change that today when they take on the Barbe Lady Bucs (JV 5p.m./Varsity 6:15 p.m.).

At 15-14 overall and 3-2 in district play the Lady Tors are currently ranked 31st in the most recent LHSAA unofficial power rankings with three games remaining. The Lady Tors will need to win all three of their remaining district games to finish second in the district and get an automatic bid to the playoffs.

“We have to win our last three and that will get us in that second spot,” Lady Tor basketball head coach Helen Lefevre said. “We can not drop one now. We have to win out.

“Finishing third will be real tough because we are sitting 31st in the power rankings right now. That half a point for getting second will move us up a little bit.”

The Lady Tors biggest obstacle in the game may be having to deal with only getting limited playing time from senior forward Reagan Royer. Royer just returned to practice on Thursday after battling the flu. She scored 18 points in Sulphur’s 40-27 win over Barbe on January 20th.

Lefevre plans on starting sophomore Kristina Brooks at the three-guard position and moving senior Callie Wyatt from guard to forward.

“We are going to start Kristina Brooks at the three position and move Callie (Wyatt) inside and see if we can’t take advantage of her size,” Lefevre said. “That is where we got a lot of our scoring last time. We hope that we can cover up those points that Reagan had last time.”

Lefevre expects an improved Lady Buc (7-21, 1-5) team after they were down by just six points against district leading Lafayette at halftime on Tuesday.

“Barbe has been playing better but their record does not show it right now,” Lefevre said. “They always play well against us.

“We expect them to shoot well and be aggressive on defense. We are going to have to show up to play. We are going to continue to press them but I think they are going to be ready for that.”

Note: Fans are encouraged to wear pink. The Lady Tors have been selling pink Barbe t-shirts to raise money for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer fund.
