The Sulphur High Golden Tor soccer team will play host to 15 teams starting today in the 21st Annual Sulphur Golden Tor soccer tournament.

The 4-3 Tors will be looking to gain some momentum for the start of their district schedule next week.

The field is divided into four pools of four teams with each pool champion advancing to the semifinal round Saturday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. The championship game will be played at 4:45 p.m. Games will be played at either the Sulphur High football stadium, track field or on one of the two fields behind the SHS ninth grade campus.

This year’s field includes several teams that made the playoffs last season and state champions.

Heading up Pool A will be the defending Division I state champion Caddo Magnet Mustangs. Also in Pool A will be Leesville who reached the first round of the Division II playoffs last year along with Opelousas and Monsignor Kelly out of Beaumont, Texas.

Caddo Magnet’s junior varsity team will play in Pool B along with New Iberia, Westminster and Barbe.

The Tors will play in Pool C and will be one of three teams in that pool that reached the playoffs last season. Sulphur will face a Beau Chene team that reached the Division II semifinals, Byrd (Div. 1 second round) and Pineville.

St. Louis and Carencro will be in Pool D. The Saints reached the Division III semifinals last year and Carencro lost in the Division I quarterfinals.  Between the two teams, they have won five state championships since 2003 (St. Louis ‘03, ‘03, ‘06, ‘07; Carencro ‘06). Also in Pool D will be Central Lafourche and Sam Houston.
