Former Sulphur High standout and current McNeese State University golfer Ben Suarez set a blistering pace during the first round of the 2011 Sulphur City Championship on Friday at Frasch Park Golf Course.
Suarez carded a five-under 66 for one of the lowest single round scores in tournament history to take a three-stroke lead into today's round.
Sitting three shots back tied for second at 69 is former champion Craig Trosclair and two-time reigning Lake Charles City champion Jacob Lejeune.
Defending Sulphur City champion Jason Horn has a lot of ground to make up after shooting a 75 in the first round.
D.J. Schexnider and Clint Stewart are tied for fourth at even-par 71 followed by Jason Cart in sixth with a 73.
