The Sulphur Lady Tor volleyball will take the court today in their season opener at home against Westlake.
The junior varsity game will start at 4 p.m. followed by the varsity game.
The Lady Tors have five seniors this year and four returning starters but the play of their younger players will be key to their success this year.
“It is the first game and there is a lot of new kids out there,” Lady Tor head coach Julie Mancuso said. “A lot of that is going to dictate how well our season goes and how well the step in. With what we lost last year we have some big shoes to fill. If we play them tough good things will happen.”
The Lady Tors are coming off their second straight playoff appearance and hope that the last week of practice will payoff as the season starts.
“We had real good practice today,” Mancuso said. “They area excited about starting the season.
“They are ready to start seeing something else because practice is getting a little monotonous. They have worked hard all summer. ”
Sulphur beat the Lady Rams three games to one last year but not before dropping the first set.
“Westlake and Sulphur tend to play each other close every time,” Mancuso said. “They are very scrappy.
“Last year we went back and fourth with them. It is an important game and we need to open up with a win if we can. They have a couple of big hitters. They are very athletic and I expect them to play us strong.”
The Lady Rams reached the regional round of the playoffs last year before falling to eventual Division III runner-up Notre Dame.
Sulphur will play at home again on Thursday when they host Sam Houston. The Lady Broncos reached the Division II semifinals last year.
