LAKE CHARLES–The Sulphur Tors’ broke out the big sticks on Thursday in a 6-2 in over DeRidder at Legion Field in the Bee Line Monogram’s Southwest Louisiana Shootout.

Sulphur racked up 12 hits including four extra-base hits. Seniors Josh East and Stephen Pennick each had two-run homeruns for Sulphur.

Austin Shepherd led off the top of the first inning with a single to left field and scored on a double by Phillip Boyette. A ground out by Logan LeJeune scored Boyette and DeRidder’s Jordan Buxton walked Kendall Daigle with two outs. Pennick got behind in the count but on a 2-2 pitch he smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Tors a 4-0 lead.

East gave the Tors a 6-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a two-run blast to almost the same spot as Pennick’s.

While the Tors were enjoying a big offensive night, the Dragons struggled at the plate.

Starting pitcher Garrett McCain and reliever Troy Scott combined to hold the Dragons to just one hit.

McCain got into a bind in the second and fourth innings but each time was able to get out of trouble. In the second inning he walked the first two batters he faced before striking out the next three to end the inning.

McCain started with two walks again in the bottom of the fourth and allowed the only hit of the game with one out on a RBI single up the middle by Collin Hanchey. DeRidder’s other run came on a Sulphur error.

But with the bases loaded, McCain again got out of the jam, this time with two strikeouts and a fly-out to right field.

Scott relieved McCain in the fifth inning and held DeRidder hitless the rest of the game.

The Tors had five batters with at least two hits. Pennick went a perfect 3-for-3 with a two-run homer. Kendall Daigle went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Shepherd went 2-for-4 with a run scored and stolen base. Brooks Morse picked up his first varsity hit in the fourth inning.

Sulphur will play St. Louis today at 5:45 p.m. at Legion field.
