The Sulphur Tors will pick it up a notch today as they practice for the first time this fall in full pads and go full contact.
The Tors have been practices in helmets, shoulder pads and short since Monday, while limiting the extent of tackling over the last three days.
Wednesday proved to be a hot and humid one for Sulphur and head coach Paul Bourgeois said that the team was slowed some but did not give in.
“It has been good,” Bourgeois said. “It looked liked it (heat) got to us today a little bit but they still got through the practice.”
“We had to make a few adjustments by adding another break in there.”
The Tors’ defense has looked good the last couple of days with linebackers Keith Lemelle and Tahj Jones batting down several passes but Bourgeois said there is still a little problem with injuries.
“I think that they are moving good,” Bourgeois said. “We just have so many little things.
“We had one of our sophomores that we were looking at is hurt. We are just having bad luck on that side of the ball as far as things keeping them out of action. I would like to see us healthy and have everybody in there. The ones we have in there are doing a good job of moving to the ball and that is how we play Sulphur defense.”
Sulphur’s offense has also been improving with some big plays from receivers Kadeem Jacobs and Dylan Stitzlein.
“I think we look good at times,” Bourgeois said. “We are making quick reads and making some big catches.
“We have talked about our receivers being people that we might have to rely to make plays and right now they have been making those. That is going to have to continue. Kadeem Jacobs and Dylan Stitzlein have really been doing well for us. They have been making big plays and I hope that continues.”
The Tors will hold an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday. Sulphur is just eight days away from getting their first chance to tackle someone other than their own teammates when they take on Washington-Marion at home on August 22nd in a scrimmage.
