The American Legion Post 179 Drillers kept their hot streak going on Monday with a 12-0 win over the Cameron Communications Post 1 Braves from South Cameron.
It was the third consecutive win for the Drillers (3-0) with all three coming by the 10-run mercy rule.
Tyler McDonald, Paul White and Gavin Gentry combined to allow just two hits and faced the minimum batters for five innings (15). McDonald pitched three innings of no-hit ball with six strikeouts to pickup the win.
White struck out three in one inning of work and Gentry allowed two hits and struck out one in the fifth inning.
The Braves Tyler Conner kept the Drillers off balance in the first inning allowing just one run on a error but Post 179 scored at least three runs in each of the next three innings.
Tanner Theriot led off with a double to left field in the bottom of the second while White followed with a RBI single two batters latter. Corey Briggs added an RBI single up the middle and Devon Shaheen dropped an RBI double in left field to make it 4-0.
Post 179 started the bottom of the third the same as the second on another big hit. This time Blake Rhodes ripped a triple to the left field corner while Ryan Cooper followed with an infield single.
Ben Dougherty brought home two runs with a double to center field and Dawson Tucker came up with a RBI single.
The Drillers kept the runs flowing in the bottom of the fourth with five runs on one hit.
Post 179 picked up one run on a wild pitch and two more on errors before White closed out the scoring with an RBI double to left-center field and stole home.
South Cameron’s only hits came in the top of the fifth inning on a single by Alex Bonsall and a double by Brennan Norred but could not get any runs across the plate.
Bonsall was thrown out trying to take third on Norred’s double by Driller’s left fielder Dawson and Norred was picked off at third by Driller’s catcher Rhodes.
Despite the three game winning streak, the Drillers will have to stay focused on their game today against a solid Grand Lake team.
“We will have to come out with the same intensity that we did against South Cameron,” Post 179 coach Robert Henson said. “We are going to be up against a very good Grand Lake team that will be looking to beat us.
“They have some good players from McNeese so we are going to have to step up our game.”
The game was originally scheduled for 6 p.m. at McMurry field 37 or 40. But because of scheduling conflicts with the Sulphur Cyclones summer ball team and reported maintenance on the two artificial turf fields at McMurry, the game may have to be moved. One possible option would be to play at Pelltier Field 14 on Picard Road. If the game were played on Field 14 it would have to start as early as 4 p.m. because there is no lights on Pelltier.
