A lack of offense in the first half peeked its ugly head again for the Sulphur Lady Tors in their 40-25 loss to the Jennings Lady Bulldogs on Thursday at the Cameron State Bank/Lake Charles Toyota Southwest Shootout at Barbe High School.
After a six point first half against Sam Houston on Wednesday, the Lady Tors scored only four points in the first half against the Lady Bulldogs.
"It was a typical first half," said Sulphur head coach Helen Lefevre. "We just come out with a lot of fight at the beginning of games. We have to learn to come out and play hard from the jump and not when we get down so bad."
The Lady Tors (6-5) shot only 2-for-14 in the first half.
"We have to figure out a way to score," said Lefevre.
Sulphur started to turn things around in the second half. The Lady Tors scored over triple of what they scored in the two previous quarters with 15 points, including a 6-0 run to end the third quarter trailing 26-19.
The Lady Tors continued their run into the fourth quarter. Hannah Cupit started off the run with a steal and turned it into two Sulphur points. After a Jennings basket, the freshman guard hit a free throw to cut the deficit to six, 28-22, the closest Sulphur would get to tying the game.
The Lady Bulldogs went on a 8-0 run in the next three minutes for a 36-22 lead with four minutes left in the game. With their offense going, Jennings held the Lady Tor offense quiet the rest of the game with only one basket and a free throw to take the 40-25 victory.
Kendra Pete scored a game-high 15 points for Jennings with Octavia Lawdins adding 12 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Callie Wyatt led the Lady Tors with nine points, all coming in the third quarter.
"Callie is a scorer," Lefevre said on her senior guard. "I need her to play that hard for four quarters. I think that would make a big difference on this team."
Kacie Demeritt added 5 points for Sulphur.
The Lady Tors will wrap up the tournament today at 7 p.m. when they take on Iowa. Jennings will take on Barbe at 5:45 p.m.
