CARENCRO-The Sulphur Lady Tors have been trying to keep pace with District 3-5A leading and 5A No. 2 Lafayette (23-0, 6-0) but Carencro threw a wrench in their plans Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears led wire to wire winning 39-33 and dropping Sulphur to third place in the district.

Trailing 31-19 heading into the final quarter, Sulphur tried to rally outscoring Carencro 14-8 but it was not enough.

“We shot 20 percent from the field,” Sulphur head coach Helen Lefevre said. “They came out in a zone defense and we were intimidated by their shot blockers in the lane and we couldn't get the outside shots.”

Hannah Cupit led Sulphur with 11 points while Kristina Brooks finished with six.

Carencro's top scorer was Taylor Ceasar with 11 points.

 

Lady Rams fall to Notre Dame in battle of top teams in 4-3A

CROWLEY-In a battle for control of District 4-3A, the Westlake Lady Rams led through three quarters but Notre Dame rallied in the fourth for a 55-52 win.

No. 9 Westlake (13-8, 2-1) led by seven after the first quarter and still clung to a two-point lead heading into the final quarter but foul trouble left the Lady Rams short handed.

Kylie Goodeaux led Westlake with 18 points but fouled out with five minutes left in the game followed by Maya Tunwar with two minutes to go and Kendra Wilrye (15 points) with a minute remaining.

Alex Miller led No. 11 Notre Dame with 14 points while Marie Ledet had 13 and Sam Lyons finished with 12.

Sayli Maynard chipped in 10 points for Westlake.

 

Lady Broncos pick up first 3-5A win

LAFAYETTE-After going 0-4 to open the District 3-5A season, the Sam Houston Lady Broncos finally picked up their first district win Tuesday 55-39 over Comeaux on the road.

Leading by one, the Lady Broncos' defense shutdown Comeaux in the second holding them to six points. Sam Houston scored 16 points in the second quarter to take a 32-21 halftime lead.

Haley Cook and Nicole Clark scored 15 points apiece to led Sam Houston.

 

DeQuincy holds off Lady Lions, 33-28

VINTON-The Vinton Lady Lions had their chances to take the lead but the DeQuincy Lady Lions held them off for a 33-28 District 4-2A win on Tuesday.

Vinton trailed by six points, 19-13, at halftime but Chanel Hillery hit a shot in the lane with 28 seconds left in the third to tie the score at 22-22 but missed a free throw that would have put the Lady Lions up by one.

DeQuincy turned the ball over 10 times in the fourth quarter and Vinton attempted 18 shots in the final eight minutes but they could only get as close as three points.

Danijah Coleman took a pass from Chanel Hillery with 54 seconds left in the game and hit a shot in the lane to cut DeQuincy's lead to 31-28 but DeQuincy was able to hold on.

Khaleelah Ross led Vinton with a game high 14 points.

Amanda Faith and Cashanta Pullard pitched in seven points apiece for DeQuincy.

 

Rams stay on top of District 4-3A

CROWLEY-The Westlake Rams retained the lead in District 4-3A on Tuesday with a 67-43 thumping of Notre Dame in Crowley.

“We still have our work cut out for us to finish out the first round of district,” Westlake head coach Doug Morris said. “There are four or five teams in the district the can beat anyone on any given night.”

Westlake took a 22-9 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Sophomore Jacory Washington led a trio of Rams in double-figures with 19 points. Dedrick Lavergne pitched in 14 points and Justin Johnson finished with 12 points.

 

Bears rally to beat Tors for first district win

CARENCRO-The Sulphur Tors led by five heading into the final quarter but Carencro came from behind to win 48-38 for their first District 3-5A win of the season.

“We had a five point lead and they hit a few shots,” Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. “Once they took the lead they spread the floor. We had to foul and they didn't miss.”

Carencro scored 21 points in the fourth quarter while holding the Tors to eight points.

Mark Lard led the Bears with a game high 21 points while no Tors finished in double figures. Jacoby Butler and Dustin Dees scored nine points apiece for Sulphur while Dillon Dees finished with seven.

 

Sam Houston falls to 3-5A leader Comeaux

LAFAYETTE-The Sam Houston Broncos dropped their third game in their last four contest on Tuesday 77-55 to District 3-5A leader Comeaux.

Hayward Register led four Spartans (17-6, 5-1)in double-figures with 23 points followed by Julian Thomas (17pts), Omasa Ogunsuy (15pts) and Paul Derouen (11pts).

Kenny Smith led Sam Houston (17-6, 2-4) with 15 points while Tanner Stewart finished with 12 and Kenny Waddell added 11 points.

 

Too many mistakes for Lions in loss to DeQuincy

VINTON-Too many mistakes caught up quickly with the Vinton Lions on Tuesday in a 66-36 loss to DeQuincy.

DeQuincy came into the game having lost by one point to Rosepine on Friday and dropping out of a first place tie in District 4-2A. But a win over Vinton coupled with Rosepine's loss to East Beauregard on Tuesday put the Tigers back in a first place tie with Rosepine.

Turnovers and missed shots led to Vinton falling behind 13-3 early in the opening quarter.

Jarrod Anderson got the Lions back into the game with a free throw and a three pointer to cut DeQuincy's led to 13-6 but by halftime the Lions trailed 35-16.

Vinton shot just 6-of-24 from the field in the first half and committed 13 turnovers.

Already leading by 20 points most of the second half, the Tigers put the icing on the cake with fifty seconds left in the game when Marlon Davis lobbed a pass over the rim to Brandon Brown who slammed it home for a 66-34 lead.

Brown finished with 18 points while Davis led the Tigers with 22 points. Junius Robinson finished with 20 points for DeQuincy.

Anderson led Vinton with 17 points while Keyshaun Bias finished with seven points.
