Sulphur, La. -

The conditions were not the most ideal but the Sulphur High Tors made the most of a rainy situation in their first intrasquard scrimmage Friday afternoon. Around 50 Tor fans also braved the weather to see their team in action.

“The wet field was not very good for us offensively,” Bourgeois said. “We were happy to get out here and get some work done.

“Look good, look bad, what ever, we have some work to do.”

On the defensive side of the ball, returning starters from last year, Tahj Jones, Keith Lemelle, Nick Tramonte and Justin Dowers made their presence felt. Bourgeois said that it would take a little time for the rest of the defense to get up to speed.

“If you saw the bodies around the ball, you know who we have been talking about; Tahj Jones, Keith Lemelle, Nick Tramonte and Justin Dowers,” Bourgeois said. “We look back and these guys had a lot of playing time last year and that has a lot to do with that.

“The ones without playing time will learn the speed and the aggressiveness that it takes on this level and they will start showing up around the ball a lot more.”

The wet conditions kept the Tors offense from really opening up but Bourgeois was pleased with the several players that they are using in the backfield currently. Will Hassien, D'Anthony Grant, Will Buck, Corey Olsen, Calvin Peco, Austin Sheperd and Keith Jasmine all saw time in the backfield on Friday.

“I like what all of them are showing us,” Bourgeois said. “Right now I feel good with up to five kids that we can play with.

“Right now we are teaching them all and giving them an opportunity and see if one sticks out more than the other. If we get that opportunity next Friday when Washington-Marion will be here. We will see the kids in a different atmosphere and we can learn a lot more about the young ones.”

With one offensive lineman, two wide receivers and a tighend as the only returning players on offense, Bourgeois said that they would need more time to put it all together.

“We have to mature offensively,” Bourgeois said. “We have to figure out who we are and what we are going to do.

“Right now we are throwing long stuff and short and we are running it right up the middle and running it wide. We are going to try to figure out in the next week or two to see what we are going to do offensively. It is a brand new bunch out there and they are not going to take the first scrimmage and do what we want them to do. It is going to take a while.”

The Tors will return to practice on Monday and will scrimmage Washington-Marion at home on Friday at 5 p.m.
