Lady Broncos outlast Iowa comeback

The Sam Houston Lady Broncos were able to outlast a late surge by the Iowa Lady Yellow Jackets to hold onto a 43-40 win on Thursday at the Cameron State Bank/Lake Charles Toyota Southwest Shootout.

Sam Houston (7-4) took a five-point lead into the final quarter when Iowa started to climb back into the game.

RaGene Trail made a basket and Alicia George hit a three to tie the game 36-36 with under three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Sam Houston was able to build back their five-point advantage by hitting clutch free throws while holding the Lady Yellow Jackets to only four points in the last three minutes of play.

The Lady Broncos went 5-for-8 in the last three minutes to seal the win.

Kim Kennedy scored 18 points for Sam Houston to lead all scorers while Haley Carrier added nine points.

Trail led Iowa with 12 points and Darion Mitchell scored eight points for the Lady Yellow Jackets.

Sam Houston will take on Westlake today at 4:30 p.m.
