Facing some of the top teams and pitchers in the state, the Sulphur Lady Tor softball team had a rough weekend in the SHS Spring Classic going 1-3.
The Lady Tors lost to Bridge City, Texas and Walker on Friday but picked up a 2-0 win over Menard before falling to Live Oak 5-0 to finish the tournament.
Sulphur was no-hit by Bridge City and Walker and was held to one hit by Live Oak.
Despite the losses, Sulphur Lady Tor head coach Julie Mancuso hopes that the experience will pay off get back into district next week.
"I did not schedule anybody easy in here," Mancuso said. "I felt like we played better today (Saturday).
"We put the ball into play better today than we did yesterday. It is just the fact that I saw improvement from yesterday is what I am pleased with. I still feel like we are going to be ok if we take care of the games that we need to win and those are the ones in district. These teams are all going to be playoff bound teams that we are playing. These good pitchers are going to prepare us for Barbe."
Sulphur will be on the road for their next two games. They will travel to Carencro on Tuesday for a non-district game at 4 p.m. before returning to district play on Thursday with a road game against Lafayette at 4 p.m.
Friday
Walker 2, Sulphur 0
SULPHUR–The Sulphur Lady Tors couldn't find an answer to Walker's Kaylee Guidry in their 2-0 loss to the Lady Cats to open play in the SHS Spring Classic.
Guidry held the Sulphur bats silent through five innings with 11 strikeouts and no hits to not allow a Lady Tor to reach base in the game.
While dominant in the circle, Guidry did her part on offense as well. In the third inning, she roped a double into right field to score two runs for the Lady Cats (17-1).
Walker's Codi Covington led all hitters going 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and a run scored. Guidry went 1-for-2 with the double and two RBI's.
Emily Vincent (2-2) took the loss for the Lady Tors pitching five innings allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.
Bridge City 3, Sulphur 0
SULPHUR–The Sulphur Lady Tors' troubles at the plate continued into their second game of the SHS Spring Classic in Sulphur in a 3-0 loss to the Bridge City (TX) Lady Cardinals.
The Lady Tors (4-7) were again held without a hit against the Lady Cardinals while they struck for seven hits in the game.
Bridge City got on the board in the second inning when J. Franklin roped a double down the right field line to score A. Angelle from third for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Cards added another run in the second when a single by E. Reed scored J. Royal to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Lady Cardinals added another run in the fifth inning to seal the 3-0 win.
Sulphur's best chance to score came in the first inning with Mandy Kyle standing on third, but Bridge City's Reed worked out of the early jam.
Reed finished the game with no runs on no hits and five strikeouts, three walks, and a hit batter.
Saturday
Sulphur 2, Menard 0
SULPHUR–The Sulphur Lady Tors picked up their first win of the SHS Spring Classic with a 2-0 win over the Menard Lady Eagles on Saturday morning.
Allison Callahan roped a single for the first Lady Tor hit in eleven innings. Jenna Meche scored on the Callahan single to give Sulphur a 1-0 lead after two innings of play.
Emily Vincent started in the circle for the Lady Tors and allowed only one hit and no runs with seven strikeouts and one walk in the win.
Menard's right fielder Ewing broke up Vincent's no-hitter bid in the top of the fifth with a bunt single for the Lady Eagles.
Sulphur added another run in the fifth inning when Mandy Kyle scored on a passed ball after hitting a triple.
Callahan led all hitters with 1-for-2 with an RBI with Kyle going 1-for-3 with a triple. Vincent added a 1-for-2 performance for Sulphur.
Live Oak 5, Sulphur 0
SULPHUR–The Sulphur Lady Tors were able to put the ball into play 13 out of their 15 at bats against Live Oak on Saturday but could only manage one hit in a 5-0 loss.
Live Oak struck first in the game with three runs in the bottom of the first inning including a two-run blast over the left field fence by catcher Tori Bankston. There other run came on a wild pitch.
Live Oak added single runs in the second and fourth innings.
Live Oak’s Sarah Anthony had her perfect game broken up in the third inning when Allison Callahan led off with a single up the middle but Live Oak was able to end the inning without giving up a run.
Emily Vincent took the loss for Sulphur after giving up three runs on hit in the first inning.
