The Sulphur Tors held Sam Houston to just 17 points in the first half but offensively the Tors struggled going 16-of-40 from the field losing to the Broncos 42-36 on Tuesday in District 3-5A action.
Sulphur won the first match up 48-44.
“We made a couple of adjustments on our defensive scheme,” Sam Houston head coach Keith Waddell said. “Sulphur is a really good team and last time they out executed us.
“Tonight we just did a little better on the execution than the first game. We had not been playing real good but it was nice to finally come out and play well.”
The Tors trailed the entire first half but never trailed by more than four points.
Sulphur's (11-17, 2-7) chance to wrest control of the game from the Broncos started late in the second when Jacoby Butler hit a layup to cut the Broncos' lead to 17-16 at halftime. The momentum carried over into the third quarter when Butler and and Dustin Dees hit back-to-back jumpers at the top of the key to give Sulphur their first lead of the game, 20-17, with just over six minutes left in the third.
Sam Houston then used their height advantage with the 6'4” Carl Pete as Tanner Stewart twice lobbed a pass from the corner to Pete who laid it in for an easy two to give the Broncos the lead back, 22-21, midway through the third.
Sam Houston (18-8, 3-6) took a nine-point lead midway through the fourth on layup by Jonas Chretian.
“Towards the middle of the third quarter we got a little sloppy and they got some easy baskets off our turnovers,” Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. “That turned the game around.
“We were in control but from that point on it was catch up time and we were not shooting it well enough to catch up.”
Sulphur was still in the game as they got back within three twice in the final 40 seconds on a three by Blake Clooney and a shot by Butler on an inbound pass from Clooney with 20 seconds left, 39-36.
But the Tors were forced to foul late in the fourth to stop the clock leading to Chretian sinking a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left for a 41-36 Sam Houston lead.
Butler led Sulphur with 12 points. Dees finished with nine while Clooney chipped in eight points.
Waddell finished with a game high 15 points while Chretian added 12 points and went 3-for-4 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Note: The Tors also struggled to even get to the free throw line lately going 1-for-4 in their last three games. Sulphur did not attempt a single free throw against Sam Houston.
