With time running out and the score tied at 2-2, the Lady Tors were in need of a miracle.
That is exactly what the Lady Tors got. With the game running into stoppage time (time added to the end of the game by the head official usually for injuries that delayed the game), the Lady Tors moved the ball up the field looking for the game winner. Carmen Rodriquez crossed the ball to the middle and Mary Moore put it in for the game winner.
“We were able to pull the game out in the end,” Lady Tor head coach Todd Hoffpauir said. “We were able to get some fortunate bounces in the game and the ball fell our way.
“It may have been the first time we have beaten Acadiana.”
The win put the Lady Tors back in the running for the playoffs, as they now sit in third place in Division I District III at 2-2 and 12-6 overall. The top three teams from each district go to the playoffs.
The Lady Tors will start the second round of district play on Tuesday when they travel to Barbe.
“Things are looking pretty good,” Hoffpauir said. “We are right in the middle of things and hopefully we can make something happen in the next four games.”
The Lady Tors were the first to score when senior Morgan Coppels scored on a penalty kick in the 35th minute after Alexandra Zambrano was fouled in the box. Coppels is 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this year.
After a fairly even first half, the Lady Rams came out strong in the second half with Jenna Rhodes bouncing a shot off the top bar just three minutes into the second half.
Acadiana found their mark one minute later when Alex Bacque was able to dribble past a diving Frankie Taylor to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lady Tors answered quickly with Zambrano sending a pass up the far sideline to Hilarie Grigsby. Grigsby pulled up 20 yards out and put a shot in off the opposite post to give the Lady Tors the lead again.
The Lady Rams kept up the pressure and tied the game again in the 70th minute of play on a header by Callie Gagnard off of a corner kick by Alex Bacque.
Acadiana out shot the Lady Tors 8-5, but the Lady Tors' defense and goalkeeper Taylor held up in the final minutes.
“They had eight shots in the second half,” Hoffpauir said. “Frankie made three good saves towards the end to keep us involved and give us an opportunity to win in the end.
“We did a good job of playing defense in the second half. We did a good job of counter attacking and taking advantage of our opportunities in the second half.”
