The Sulphur Tor soccer team will be making their first appearance in Division I playoffs since 2008 when they travel to take on the St. Thomas More Cougars in Lafayette on Saturday.
The Tors picked up the No. 20 seed while Cougars are seeded 13th. The game will be played at 4 p.m.
“They have a new coach so I don’t' know what kind of game they play,” Tor head coach Walter Oglesby said. “We will start off the way we usually do and put the pressure on and try to score quick. We won’t be changing things too much.”
The Tors and Cougars did not play this season but are not unfamiliar with each other, as they spent the previous two seasons in the same district.
The Cougars enter the playoffs with an 8-5-1 record after taking second in Division I District IV.
Sulphur is 8-12-2 and finished third in Division I District III.
The Tors will be looking to get their first playoff win since the 2004 season. That year, the Tors advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Lafayette 3-1.
Sulphur’s last trip to the playoffs in 2008 ended in a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss on the road to Ruston.
Head-to-head, the Tors and Cougars had three common opponents during the regular season (Comeaux, Acadiana and New Iberia.) The Tors lost 2-1 to New Iberia while St. Thomas More lost to NISH twice on penalty kicks.
