It’s been awhile for the Sulphur Lady Tors since their win last week against Pineville, but the Lady Tors are going to have to wait for another victory as they fell to the defending Class 5A state champion St. Thomas More Lady Cougars 3-1 on Thursday.
The Lady Tors (2-3) have missed several games because of the recent rainy weather and was ready to finally play in a live game rather than practicing.
“If anything, they have been chomping at the bits to play,” said Sulphur head coach Julie Mancuso. “There was nothing to get them fired up. They are tired of practicing and I am too. We just want to get some games in.”
STM struck early in the first inning when Shellie Landry hit a triple to right field to score Jessica Suire for a 1-0 lead.
Landry struck again in the second inning with a two run single to left for a 3-0 STM lead after two complete innings of play.
After giving up three runs in the first two innings, Lady Tors’ starter Allison Callahan sat down the Lady Cougars in order the next two innings.
Callahan finished the game pitching four innings allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
The Lady Tors picked up their only run in the contest in the bottom half of the third inning. Haleigh Willis roped a double to left field for Sulphur’s second hit of the game. Willis scored on an STM error off the bat of Jessi Fitts to make the score 3-1.
Sulphur had an opportunity in the fourth inning to pick up some more runs when they loaded the bases on the Lady Cougars’ Claire Guedry. STM turned to Prophet Gaspard who quickly ended the Lady Tors’ rally with two strikeouts and held the Sulphur bats silent the rest of the game. She pitched three and two-thirds for STM to pick up the save with seven strikeouts.
In her last 17 and two-thirds innings against Sulphur, Gaspard has held the Lady Tors without a hit.
“Prophet is good and we know that,” said Mancuso. “They forced to bring her in and I was glad about that but we still have to execute with runners on and push them across.
“We have to take advantage of those opportunities.”
Emily Vincent came in relief for Sulphur and pitched three innings of scoreless softball allowing just one hit with four strikeouts and one walk.
