The Sulphur Lady Tors opened District 3-5A play in style with a 12-0 rout of the LaGrange Lady Gators in five innings on Thursday at Frasch Park.
“It’s a district win and I’m going to take it,” said Sulphur head coach Julie Mancuso. “I think they did well by coming out strong and not letting up. I’m real pleased.”
The Lady Tors (4-5, 1-0) got on the board early in the first inning when Emily Vincent put down a squeeze bunt to allow Taylor Drost to score from third who led off the game with a triple. Sulphur wasn’t satisfied with the one run and went on a six run two-out rally to take a commanding 7-0 lead after the first inning.
Caitlen Blanchard led off the second inning for Sulphur with a double down the third base line and scored on a Jenna Meche single to give the Lady Tors a 8-0 lead going into the third inning.
Sulphur added four more runs in the third inning on only three hits to take the 12-0 lead.
While the Sulphur bats were busy, Allison Callahan held LaGrange’s offense silent through five innings of work. Callahan (2-4) allowed just one hit while striking out eight batters and no walks. The Lady Gators’ only hit came in the first inning when Cherrell Beaudoin led off the game with a single.
Blanchard led the Lady Tors with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a double, two RBI’s, and three runs scored. Mandy Kyle added a 2-for-4 effort with a triple, double, and two RBI’s.
Shameka Robinson took the loss for LaGrange (0-4) going four innings while allowing 12 runs on 10 hits and three walks.
Sulphur will return to action today when they take on Walker to start off the SHS Spring Classic. The game is scheduled to start at 4:45 on Field 15 at the North Frasch Complex.
“It’s a great way (to start out the weekend),” Mancuso said on the win. “It takes off the stress of getting the district game out of the way and now we have some tournament experience. It should be a pretty weekend. We have some good teams coming in and we are going to work on improving our side of the game.
