With just two district games remaining, the Lady Tors are on the verge of making the playoffs. All they need is to win their last two games starting with today’s game at home against Acadiana (JV 5 p.m./Varsity 6:16 p.m.).
The Lady Tors (16-14, 4-2) are currently tied with LaGrange (13-16, 4-2) for second place in District 3-5A. The top two teams in each district receive an automatic bye to the playoffs. Sulphur will play LaGrange on Friday in a game that could be for second in the district but they will have to get by the Lady Rams first.
“They (Acadiana) have not won a district game but tomorrow we have to take care of business,” Lady Tor head coach Helen Lefevre said. “We have to win out and get that second place spot.”
There are 12 wild-card playoff spots but sitting at 31st in the LHSAA unofficial power rankings released on February 3rd a loss could drop the Lady Tors below 32nd.
In their first meeting, the Lady Tors came away with a 50-31 in Scott.
Lefevre said the key would be to contain Acadiana’s Shaquera Gary.
“They pretty much sat back in a zone against us last time,” Lefevre said. “We are kind of expecting the same thing.
“Gary is a very good athlete. She can score from the outside and post up. Their starting point guard was out last time. We are expecting Gary to start at post tomorrow with the point guard back.”
The Lady Tors found out on Monday that they would be without the services of their leading scorer and rebounder for today’s game. Senior forward Reagan Royer is seeking treatment for migraines.
Sulphur played their last game with Royer playing sparingly in a win over Barbe. They will go with the same lineup from that game with fellow senior Callie Wyatt moving from guard to forward and sophomore Kristina Brooks starting at the three-guard.
“We have not ruled her out for Friday,” Lefevre said. “We are going to have to make some adjustments.
“Callie will move down to the four and we will start Brooks in Callie's spot at the three. We are confident that Kristina is going to go in there and handle the job.”
Note: Wyatt had her best district game against the Lady Rams in the first meeting with 14 points and senior forward Kaitlin Desselle added 11 points.
