SULPHUR–The Sulphur Tors got a little taste of action last week in their scrimmage against Washington-Marion but will get their first true test in a live game today in the Lake Area Jamboree at McNeese State University’s Cowboy Stadium.
The jamboree will kickoff at 6:30 p.m. with the first game featuring Westlake and Barbe. Sulphur will play host Sam Houston at 8 p.m.
Sulphur had some problems on both sides of the ball last week in the scrimmage and will get a chance to see if those problems have been corrected when they take the field against the Broncos.
“Most of the things that we saw are correctable things,” Sulphur head coach Harold Fusilier said. “We are going to find out tomorrow night if we have corrected them.
“I think that some of the kids were a little nervous last week. We would like to see our kids be a lot more physical, especially in our league if you are not physical you are not going to do very well.”
The Tors will get one of their returning starters back today. Senior defensive lineman Cody Mills has been practicing since Monday and will be ready to go today.
“Mills will play tomorrow,” Fusilier said. “He has practiced since Monday and he is doing fine.
“We are anxious to see him because he missed the scrimmage. He will make a big difference we hope in our ball club. He has all of the things that we need up front.”
Fusilier said that the Tors will get a taste of what they will be facing all season as they try to contain Broncos’ quarterback Evan Powell.
“We already know that the quarterback is an excellent player and a great athlete,” Fusilier said. “It is probably good for us to see that because we will see it all year.
“Our kids will get a chance to gauge their abilities against his.”
Sulphur held a 14-0 lead over Sam Houston in last year’s jamboree game but had to hold on for a 21-18 win.
Sam Houston head coach Russ Sutherland knows that today’s game will be just as tough as last year.
“It is a tough match up when you get a good 5A school,” Sutherland said. “They are a good established 5A program but you have to start some where. We need to be in some game situations.”
Sutherland hopes to see a more balanced offense this year.
“We are hoping to be balanced on offense,” Sutherland said. “Last year we started too slow. It ended up the score was close. We fought back and they run the kickoff back. Our skill players need to be productive and our offensive line needs to hold a block.”
