The Westlake Lady Rams will open up District 4-3A play today when they travel to take on the Eunice Lady Bobcats in Eunice at 5 p.m.
The Lady Rams (3-4-1) will be looking to defend their 2009 District 4-3A championship in a totally new looking district with only one other returning member from the 2009 campaign. Westlake and Iowa are the only teams left in 4-3A since the redistricting this year with Eunice, Church Point, Crowley, and Northwest just joining the league this season.
"We are having to travel more that’s for sure," said Lady Rams' head coach Jessica Provost. "It's like you get used to playing someone so you expect that what you are going against. You try to research against them and in this district you are playing against a whole bunch of different teams and you really don't know anything about them."
Eunice (5-3) moved down from Class 4A where they reached the regional round of the 2009 playoffs. Provost said that the Lady Bobcats are an experienced group with eight seniors and a junior on the starting line-up.
"Eunice is good obviously," Provost stated. "They were in 4A last year and dropped to 3A this year and they have eight seniors and one junior so they have been playing together. They have their team concept down where I'm working on it."
The Lady Rams are looking to bounce back from a two-game losing streak heading into league play coming off losses to South Cameron and Mandeville.
Provost said that she hopes the hard work on the last week of practice will pay off.
"I would like to see us come out and play ball," said the Westlake coach. "We have really worked on becoming a team more and fixing the mental game. It's still early so I'm not panicking yet because I believe we will come together. We are very young and we are still learning each other. To start district this fast is a little tough.
"I totally believe in this team."
After today's game, Westlake will participate in the Sulphur High School Spring Classic starting on Friday afternoon.
