Sulphur, La. —
Close to 100 runners from as far away as Tennessee will be in Sulphur on Saturday to take part in the Park to Park Half Marathon.
The race will start at the Westminster Presbyterian Church on Center Circle and will wind 13.1 miles through the city of Sulphur including trips through McMurry and Frasch parks.
According to race organizer and owner of Race Pace Multi-Sport, LLC, Aunjelle LaFleur, the year’s event will draw more than double last year’s race which featured 52 runners. 83 athletes from across Louisiana as well as Texas, Mississippi and Tennessee have signed up and LaFleur expects over 100 by race time (7:30 p.m. Saturday morning).
The Park-to-Park Half Marathon is in its second year under the current name but it actually got its start three year’s ago with 30 runners as the ‘Run for Jimbo’ to provide funds for Jimbo Nope’s cancer treatment. Nope will be at the finish line Saturday to congratulate participants as they finish.
This year’s event will benefit several local organizations including the Sulphur High cross country program, the FCA Endurance team, Sulphur Storm Soccer and local Girl Scout Troop 2375 in the Pines to the Gulf Council.
Motorist should use extreme caution when traveling along the race route Saturday morning. Along Maplewood drive, the outside west bound and outside east bound lanes will be closed during the race and the Sulphur Police Department will be out blocking intersections as participants come through.
It is not too late to sign up for the marathon. Registration will run from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. Saturday morning.
