In their first post season game in 10 years, the Sam Houston Broncos will hit the road on Saturday to take on the Dutchtown Griffins at 6 p.m.

Sam Houston (10-7-3) reached the playoffs despite losing their regular season finale to Comeaux 1-0 and are out to prove they are a legitamate playoff contender in their first season playing in Division I.

“They are excited an they feel like they are getting a second chance,” Sam Houston coach Kirk Farquhar said. “They want to prove that was not the way they have played all season.

“We just could put any shots in the back of the net.”

The Griffins (9-7-6) are the 11th seed while the Broncos enter the playoffs seeded 22nd.

Sam Houston and Dutchtown play in what is considered by most soccer fans in the state to be the two toughest districts.

Sam Houston finished fourth in Division I District III behind No. 4 St. Thomas More, No. 5 Lafayette and No. 7 Acadiana. District III’s fifth place team, Carencro, also reached the playoffs as the No. 25 seed.

Dutchtown finished tied for second with No. 10 St. Amant in District V behind No. 6 Catholic-Baton Rouge.

There is only one common opponent for the Broncos and the Griffins and that is Carencro. Both teams beat the Bears 2-1.

“Most people are saying that our district is one of the toughest district in the state along with their district,” Farquhar said. “They don’t have the 1-5 guys in their district but they have the 6-10 and they look good top to bottom.”

Sam Houston only has one player out with an injury after senior defender Jordan Schlofeldt broke his collar bone against Acadiana. But the Broncos are going to have to control the time of possession with a short bench.

“For us it is going to be trying to hold the ball as much as possible and not give it away,” Farquhar said. “We have to win the possession game.

“They (Dutchtown) are going to have the advantage as far as numbers.”
