Scoring mistakes again caused confusion on Friday at the Billy Navarre Chevrolet/B.S. Walker Relays at Sulphur High School.

Last year, Sulphur thought they had lost to Barbe only to get the win in the end after a scoring error was found.

This year, Sulphur and Barbe coaches assumed they had tied 179-179 but the final scoresheet showed Sulphur winning 189-179 adding more confusion. The final margin wasn’t confirmed until Saturday morning when a scoring error was once again found in the 4x200, plus the pole vault giving the Tors just a one point win over Barbe, 183-182.

“When you are putting on your own meet, it is hard to get a grasp of where you are in the team standings while administering the meet,” Sulphur boys track coach Randy Baggett said. “But these guys took care of business and at the end of the night we had a chance and they took care of business.

“There were so many up and down moments today but I think it says a lot about the quality of where we are going. We had some really good performances today so I am really proud of the kids and the way they stepped.”

In the 4x200, Sulphur finished second behind Barbe but was entered as the fourth-place team.

Even with all the scoring issues, the Sulphur’s win wouldn’t have happened if not for the 28 points it scored in the final two events.

Barbe dominated the field scoring 76 points led by Khalil Jones who won the long (20-5 ¾) and triple jump (44-8 ½). The Bucs led Sulphur 123-95 after Jakoby Pappillion (11.18) and Christopher John (11.33) placed first and third in the 100-meter dash but that lead went down to 11 with two events to go.

Jonathon Deville and Hayden Foolkes finished first and second in the 3,200-meter run to pull Sulphur within one point, 174-173, of the lead. Deville was running in the 3200 for the first time this year and posted one of the best times in the area at 10:38.92.

In the final event of the night, Hunter Toups, Kobe Nevills, Gage Rapp and Matthew Griffiths teamed up to run Sulphur’s best time of the season to win the 4x400-meter relay (3:27.20) and the team title.

In all, the Tors scored 64 points in the four distance races (800, 1600, 3200, 4x400).

“It always seems to come down to the 3200 and the 4x400,” Sulphur track coach Randy Baggett said. “I am real proud of those guys.

“Sulphur track coach Randy Baggett said. “In the 3200, Hayden and Jonathon did a real good job and it was Jonathon’s first time every running it.”

Griffiths won outstanding track honors with wins in the 800 (2:04.37) and 1600-meter run (4:41.50), as well as the anchor leg in the 4x400.

Sulphur also got a big boost from hurdler Brandon Hayden and throws specialist Lacolby Tucker.

Hayden set a school record in the 300-meter hurdles at 41.65 seconds for a second-place finish. He also took fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Tucker tied with Jones for outstanding field honors. Tucker broke 50 feet (51-4) for the first time this year to win the shot put and won the discus with a throw of 126-7.

Barbe won the girls’ team title, its third in a row, with 195 points while Sulphur took second with 146.

Senior Kristen ‘Koko’ Daniels set the tone for Barbe’s run to the girls’ team title with three wins in the field to earn outstanding field honors. Daniels won the high jump while nearly matching a meet record with a jump of 5-6, plus the long jump (16-8) and triple jump (34-4 ½).

As if all that wasn’t enough, Daniels anchored the winning 4x400-meter relay team that turned in its best time of the season, 4:09.36.

Sulphur’s Latyana Berry and Barbe’s Brooklyn Cousin tied for outstanding track honors with 22.5 points each.

Berry and Cousin went head-to-head for the first time this season in the 100-meter dash and didn’t disappoint. Berry edged Cousin by .08 seconds with a time of 12.77 seconds.

Also for Sulphur, junior Malasia Sonnier placed in the top-three in three field events. Throwing the javelin for the first time this season, she finished second with a throw of 111-5 and won the shot put 36-0 ½) and discus (99-10).

“We have been throwing her the last couple of weeks,” Baggett said. “This week we decided to press the button and she is a really explosive powerful athlete. It is just matter of being patient.”

Barbe’s Ciera Gilroy set a meet record in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.99. The old record, 2:23.05, had been held by LaGrange’s Rachel Easton since 2008.
