A look back at some of the top individual performances during the fourth week (March 10 to Mar. 16) of the 2019 prep softball and baseball season in the Southwest Daily News coverage area.
Cameron Lejeune, Sulphur, Jr., P
Lejeune struck out a career high 11 batters to lead Sulphur to a 4-2 win over Dutchtown at the SPOT Classic Saturday. Lejeune allowed just three hits and walked two batters to improve to 2-1. His 11 strikeouts are the most by a Tor pitcher this season.
Braden Duhon, SHHS, Sr., CF
The Broncos’ lead off batter went 9 for 17 last week while scoring seven runs in five games. His best game of the week was a 2 for 3 performance in a 6-4 win over Dutchtown Friday at the SPOT Classic. He stole five bases and scored three runs in that game and hit is seventh double of the season.
Marcus Mott, SHHS, Jr., P
Mott is 2-0 as a starter after pitching a complete game Friday to lead Sam Houston to an 8-0 win over Airline at the SPOT Classic. He held the Vikings to three hits while striking out four and walking two batters.
Cameron Meeks, SHHS, Sr., 1B
The senior McNeese State signee hit three doubles last week and now has 16 extra base hits and 27 RBIs. He went 6 for 15 for the week including 4 for 4 with three doubles, four runs and a RBI to help the Broncos beat Airline.
Drew Heinen, Vinton, Jr., 3B
Heinen batted .455 last week with five hits in three games. In a 10-9 win over Madison Prep at the Vidalia tournament, Heinen went 3 for 4 and hit a single with one out in the bottom of the seventh to bring home Dennis Bickham for the winning run.
Austin Benoit, Vinton, Jr., RF
Benoit went 6 for 10 last week to improve his team leading batting average to .423. He has three multi-hit games and allowed just one earned runs in two innings of relief on the mound.
Jena Johnson, Westlake, Sr., CF
The senior batted .500 last week to raise her season average to .394. In a nondistrict game against Iowa on March 12th, Johnson went 3 for 4 and hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning for the go-ahead runs to lead Westlake to a 6-5 win.
Lanie Burleson, Sulphur, Jr., 2B
Burleson went 6 for 12 in five games last week to push her batting average closer to .400. She also drove in eight runs, scored 11 and hit her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in a 14-1 win over Assumption Saturday.
Bailey Chaisson, Sulphur, So., SS
The sophomore scored 11 runs last week to bring her season total to 27. In five games, she went 11 for 17 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs and 13 RBI. She hit a pair of two-run home runs against Live Oak an Assumption at the SHS Spring Classic over the weekend.
Abi Massey, Sulphur, So., C
After driving in 12 runs last week, Massey raised her season total to 32 RBIs in 18 games. She also posted her third two home run game with a pair against Lafayette on March 14th along with seven RBIs.
Sophia Tanner, Sulphur, Jr., P
Tanner picked up three win last week in the circle and improved to 5-6, while allowing just two earned runs in 26 2/3 innings to help extend Sulphur’s win streak to nine games.
Kimber Hamilton, SHHS, Sr., C
Hamilton had some big hits last week with a three-run home run against Barbe and went 4 for 4 with three runs and an RBI in a 14-1 win over West Ouachita Saturday. Hamilton leads Sam Houston with seven home runs and 32 RBIs.
Jenny Griggers, SHHS, Sr., P
Griggers’ week started with a tough 9-6 loss to Barbe on March 12th, but rebounded to allowed just three earned run in her next four games to lower her earned run average to 2.01. In her last four games, Griggers pitched 23 innings with 14 strikeouts to just three walks to improve to 15-2.
