ULPHUR — The Louisiana High School Athletic Association pressed the pause button the state baseball tournament at McMurry Park.
Thursday’s games were washed out by severe weather, and with more of the same expected, the decision was made to postpone the tournament. It will resume Sunday and run through Tuesday.
Thursday’s first three games of the day were started and stopped multiple times before being postponed for good just before 2 p.m. when lightning struck and exploded a tree inside the park.
“We were probably going to play through train until the lightning struck that tree,” Grand Lake head coach Tyler Alton said. “It sounded like it was on top of our dugout. It was just outside left field.”
Lightning also struck the flare stack at the Indorama chemical plant south of McMurry Park, causing a temporary power outage at the facility and heavy flaring and black smoke, the company said in a news release.
As for the schedule, Classes 2A, B, C and Divisions III, IV and V championships will be played on Monday and Classes 5A, 4A, 3A, 1A and Divisions I and II championships will be played Tuesday.
Grand Lake, the top seed in Class 1A, was trailing No. 4 Kentwood 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when play was halted with a runner on first base and one out. It was the second time in as many rounds that Grand Lake had to deal with a weather delay. The Hornets’ quarterfinal game at Logansport started on Friday and finished Sunday, forcing them to make the 7-hour round-trip twice.
“At least we know how to handle it and don’t have to travel as far this time,” Alton said.
In Class 3A, No. 1 Sterlington and No. 4 Berwick were tied 0-0 with one out in the top of the fourth inning and Class 4A No. 1 Tioga held 1-0 lead over No. 4 Benton in the top of the fourth inning.
Grand Lake’s game will resume at 10 a.m. Sunday. Berwick and Sterlington will start at 10:30 a.m. and Tioga and Benton will resume at 11 a.m.
Six Southwest Louisiana teams didn’t get to start their games Thursday — Class 5A No. 1 Barbe and No. 2 Sam Houston, Class 3A No. 3 South Beauregard and No. 10 Iowa and Class 1A No. 6 Oberlin and No. 10 Merryville.
Oberlin and Merryville will play each other at noon and South Beauregard and Iowa will play at 12:30 p.m. Barbe and West Monroe’s semifinal game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. followed by Sam Houston and Parkway at 7 p.m.
Three years ago, the Class 5A and 3A state championship game had to be completed on a Sunday because of rain. Barbe won its ninth state championship game 5-2 over C.E. Byrd and South Beauregard lost to West Feliciana 6-2 in the 3A championship in 2016.
