Westlake sophomore Myka Lester hit three homeruns last week.

A look back at some of the top individual performances during the seventh week (April 2nd through April 9th) of the 2017 prep softball and baseball season in the Southwest Daily News coverage area.



Myka Lester • Westlake HS • So.

Lester has been the Lady Rams’ anchor in the circle this year but she also has swung a big bat and it showed last week. In two games, she hit three homeruns to bring her season total to six. She hit two solo homeruns in 12-0 win over South Beauregard on Tuesday and a two-run shot in a 4-3 loss to Jennings on Thursday.

Jordan Lafosse • Sam Houston HS • So.

The sophomore continues to shine for Sam Houston after belting her fourth homerun of the season last week and hitting .667 in three games with five RBI and three runs. Against perennial 4A contender St. Thomas More, Lafosse blasted a two-run homerun and hit a pair of doubles, her sixth and seventh of the season.

Jill Poullard • Sam Houston HS • So.

The multi-sport start increased her hitting streak to nine games last week after going 7-for-11 in three games with a double, two triples, four RBI and four runs. She was a perfect 4-for-4 on Thursday against Lafayette with a triple, two runs, and two RBIs.


Jenny Griggers • Sam Houston HS • So.

Griggers started off the week with her first district loss but rebounded with a no-hitter on Thursday against Lafayette and a three-hitter on Friday against St. Thomas More. Griggers improved to 19-4 and lowered her earned run average to 2.76. She had four strikeouts and no walks in a 15-0 three-inning win over Lafayette


Brayden Winn • Westlake HS • Sr.

The senior continued his hot streak last week going 5-for-9 at the plate and extended his season-high hit streak to 11 games. He had a pair of two-hit games against Jennings and Notre Dame and drove in two runs in a 5-4 loss to South Beauregard on Tuesday.

Hadyn Stutes • Sulphur HS • Jr.

Stutes extended his hitting streak to five games last week and hit pair of doubles to raise his season average to .329. On Saturday against Hahnville, Stutes went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.


Evan Goss • Westlake HS • So.

Goss earned his third District 4-3A win on Thursday in 8-5 victory over Jennings at home. He struck out a season high nine with just three walks and allowed five unearned runs on five hits in six innings.

Chris Haggard • Sam Houston HS • Sr.

Haggard, half of the one-two punch on the mound for the Broncos, pitched a complete game, his fourth of the season, on Thursday to lead the Broncos to a 3-0 win over Lafayette. He pitched a one-hitter and struck out a season high nine batters with no walks. He also had a productive week at the plate going 5-for-8 with two RBI, two runs and a double.

Peyton Johnson • Sam Houston HS • Sr.

Johnson, a McNeese State signee, has cemented himself as one of the top pitchers in District 3-5A after his third straight complete game and win. On Tuesday in 4-1 win over three-time defending state champion Barbe, Johnson allowed just one run on four hits while striking out nine for the second straight game and walking just one batter. He now has a 1.33 earned run average in district games.


Brody Strahan • Sulphur HS • Sr.

Strahan had a solid week as a relief pitcher. In two appearances totaling six innings, Strahan allowed no earned run and three unearned runs. Strahan also had a huge hit at the plate, a solo homerun, his first of the season, in a 7-3 win over Comeaux on Thursday. It was just the second homerun by a Tor this season.
