LAFAYETTE — The Sulphur Tor soccer team pulled a major upset Saturday, beating Division II No. 2 St. Thomas More 1-0 on the road.
“I am very proud of the team’s effort today,” Sulphur head coach Trevor Foolkes said. “It is a great win against a very good St. Thomas More team who had only two losses on the season.
“The guys executed our game plan very well. They worked hard in possession and very hard when out of possession. It was definitely a team effort.”
Jason Banegas scored the game-winner in the 65th minute.
Tor goalkeeper Tanner Massey made four saves.
The Tors (11-5-5) started the week ranked 25th in the latest unofficial LHSAA Division I power rankings. Only the top 24 make the playoffs.
The Tors’ playoff hopes could hinge on their final regular season game on Monday at Division III No. 11 DeRidder (15-4-3).
After winning 11 consecutive games, St. Thomas More (14-3-1) has lost two of their last three games.
