Jace Benoit (Sulphur HS golf)

Jace Benoit paced the Sulphur Tors with a 73 on Wednesday at the St. Louis Catholic Invitational held at The National Golf Club of Louisiana.

WESTLAKE — Rain washed out the first round of the St. Louis Catholic Invitational but that didn’t put a damper on the competition on Wednesday as the host Saints edged Barbe and Sulphur for the boys’ team title at the National Golf Club of Louisiana.

St. Louis, led by the top two medalist in Logan Kuehn and Zac Eisner, finished with a 300-team score while Barbe was just one behind at 301 and Sulphur at 302.

Kuehn, who fought through an illness all round, shot a three-under 69. After starting off the round with a bogey, he birdied the final three holes on the front nine plus the par-five 11th hole to get to three-under.

Eisner finished tied for second with Hamilton Christian’s Eric Brown at one-under 71.

Sulphur was led by Jace Benoit and Chase McCormick who both overcame rough patches on the front nine to turn in rounds of 73 and 74 respectively.

Benoit bogeyed three of the first four holes but birdied No. 6 and No. 9 to get his round back on track.

McCormick had three-straight bogeys (5, 6, 7) on the front nine but finished his round with a birdie on the par-four 18th hole.

Barbe was led by Gage Primeaux who shot an even-par 72.

On the girls’ side, the Sulphur Lady Tors won the girls’ team title by a comfortable 12-stroke margin at three-under, 141. Lacassine was second at 153 and St. Louis was third (181).

Sulphur junior Brooke Tyree dominated the course and was five-under through 13 holes before a double-bogey on the par-five 17th hole set her back two shots.

Tyree won top medalist honors with a three-under 69 while teammate Brooke Duzan finished in a tie for second with Neville’s Aoifa O’Donovan at 72.

Laccasine claimed the other two top-five spots with Daphney Tilton shooting a 75 and Carly Whittington at 78.

Also for Sulphur, Abbie Richard shot a season low 85 to finished seventh.
