D.J. Harris (Sulphur HS running back)

Sulphur running back D.J. Harris ran for 192 yards and two scores on Friday in the Tors’ 38-35 loss to Southside.

It is back-to-back heartbreakers for the Sulphur Tors.

A week after losing to Lafayette on the road 11-10, the Sulphur Tors dropped a tough 38-35 District 3-5A to Southside for homecoming Friday at Matt Walker Memorial Stadium.

After the Tor defense made a stand inside the red zone, Sulphur (1-5, 0-3) went on an 86-yard drive to take a 35-31 lead with 6:53 left in the game. Junior Jacob Clark hit wide receiver Gavin Elliott for a 27-yard touchdown for the Tors first lead since the 8:01 mark for the third quarter when D.J. Harris’ 1-yard run gave the Tors their biggest lead of the game, 28-17. Clark started the drive with a 42-yard run.

But the Sharks came back to score the go-ahead touchdown with 1:30 left on a 12-yard pass from Dillon Monette to Jack Pruitt.

The Tors got the ball back on their 20-yard line and converted on third down twice on a Southside (4-2, 1-2) penalty and a 13-yard reception by Bode Barlow. Gavin Elliott made a 13-yard catch and got out of bounds with four seconds left, but the Tors missed a potential game-tying field goal as time expired.

Harris, Elliott and Clark all had career-best performances for the Tors. Harris ran for 192 yards and two scores on 27 catches and Elliott caught seven passes for 169 yards and two scores.

Clark threw for 247 yards and two scores while completing 17 of 32 passes with no interceptions.

Monette littered the field with passes, completing 26 of 41 for 420 yards and five touchdowns. Three of those touchdown passes went to Pruitt, who finished with 125 yards on 11 receptions. Rhett Peloquin caught 12 passes for 235 yards and a touchdown.

Sulphur will play three of its final four regular season games on the road starting with a trip to Comeaux (2-4, 1-2) Friday. Southside will travel to Sam Houston (5-1, 3-0) on Friday.
