WESTLAKE — The St. Louis Saints relied on a powerful offensive run game to beat the Westlake Rams 47-32 Friday night in a District 4-3A shootout.

The win, coupled with a Lake Charles College Prep overtime win over Iowa, means St. Louis, Westlake and Prep are tied for first place heading into the final week of the regular season.

The Saints (6-2, 3-1) struck first with a 59-yard rushing touchdown by Evan Joubert on the second play of the game.

Westlake (3-5, 3-1) blocked a punt to set up its first score, a 1-yard run by J.J. Ross.

The Saints answered with a Jack Watson field goal to take a 10-6 lead, then added to it with a 51-yard touchdown catch by Jadon Johnson.

The Rams regained the lead at 18-17 on a 2-yard run by Jasia Semien and 11-yard touchdown pass from Drew Winn to Nic Runnels.

A 1-yard quarterback sneak by Cooper Miller gave 24-18 going into halftime. The Saints kept the lead for good, adding scores on runs of 5, 11 and 20 yards by Joubert.

Semien scored on a 12-yard run and Winn on a 1-yarder for Westlake in the second half.

“We played assignment football on defense,” Saints head coach Chad Lavergne said. “Our defensive line did a great job so our linebackers could fill. We tried to force them to throw and we played disciplined football to do that.”

The Rams pulled within three points in the second half, but the Saints were able to hold on for the win.

“We know it’s a long game, we’ve been in a lot of games like this,” Lavergne said. “Our kids do a good job at not putting too much meaning in one good or one bad play. They just keep playing.”

The Saints will host Iowa at Sulphur High next week with a chance to claim a share of the crown. Lake Charles College Prep can earn a share with a win Thursday night over South Beauregard, while Westlake will travel to Jennings for a Friday game.

The loss broke the Rams’ three-game winning streak.
