LAFAYETTE — The Sulphur Tors dominated the first half, but Lafayette rallied in the second half to beat the Tors 11-10 on Friday.

With 55 seconds left in the game, Lafayette took lead when Derezz Landry scored on a 10-yard run plus a two-point conversion run.

Sulphur tried to march down the field with less than a minute left, but turned the ball over with less than 30 seconds left.

Sulphur’s (1-4, 0-2) defense shutout Lafayette (4-1, 1-1) in the first half. The Lions had just first half two possessions and both ended on interceptions.

The Tors scored all of their points in the second quarter. Hayden Habetz kicked a 31-yard field goal and Braylen Walker caught a four-yard pass from Jacob Clark with 1:10 left in the second quarter. Clark completed 14 of 27 passes for 167 yards. Walker made eight catches for 58 yards and Gavin Elliott had four catches for 87 yards.

Sulphur running back D.J. Harris ran for 103 yards on 16 carries.

Lafayette’s Jacques Comeaux kicked a 37-yard field goal to cut Sulphur’s lead to 10-3 with 1:08 left in the third quarter.

Sulphur will host Southside (3-2, 0-2) on Friday.

LAFAYETTE — Sam Houston senior Tavyen Grice scored four touchdowns to lead Sam Houston to a come from behind 45-27 win over Comeaux on the road Friday.

Grice nearly eclipsed the century mark twice. He ran for 97 yards and three touchdowns on 12 carries and caught 11 passes for 122 yards and a score.

Down 14-10 in the second quarter, Grice scored his first touchdown of the night, a 7-yard run, to put the Broncos 17-14.

Comeaux (2-3, 1-1) threatened in the third quarter when it cut the Broncos’ lead to 31-27 after a 12-yard run by Eddie Flugence, but Grice scored on runs of six and 17 yards in the fourth to put the game away.

Sam Houston senior quarterback Kyle Bartley completed 22 of 36 passes for 241 yards and three touchdowns. It was his four consecutive multi-touchdown game.

Comeaux quarterback Tre Harris threw for 274 yards (12-28-1), including a 59-yard touchdown to Malik Nabors that gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Nabors caught nine passes for 228 yards.

Sam Houston will host Barbe (4-1, 2-0) on Friday in a battle of two of the three teams tie for first place in District 3-5A.

VINTON — The Vinton Lions scored on their first two plays of the game and rolled to a 48-0 win over D’Arbonne Woods at B.S. Walker Stadium Friday.

The start of the game was delayed by more than an hours as severe thunderstorms made their way through the area.

On the Lions first play of the game, Drew Heinen threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Keishawn Budwine.

On the first play of Vinton’s next possession, Heinen hooked up with Budwine for a 14-0 lead on a 29-yard pass. Budwine had two catches for 91 yards and Heinen completed 4 of 6 passes for 110 yards and three touchdowns. Heinen also had two runs for 70 yards, including a 72-yard run in the second quarter. Jordan Janice scored on runs of 28 and 15 yards and finished with 57 yards on four carries.

Vinton scored needed just 21 offensive plays to score six touchdowns.

Vinton led 48-0 at halftime and the second half was reduced to two six-minute quarter instead of the usual 12-minute quarters.

Running back Jordan Hill led D’Arbonne Woods (1-4) with 98 yards on 21 carries.

Vinton (2-2) will open district on Friday at Pickering (3-2).
