LONGVILLE — With the score tied 21-21, Westlake scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat South Beauregard 35-21 on Friday.
The win coupled with Lake Charles College Preps’ (4-3, 1-1) 33-27 win over St. Louis (4-2, 1-1) and Jennings’ 35-7 (3-4, 1-1) win over Iowa (4-3, 1-1) leaves the Rams (2-4, 2-0) in sole possession of first place in District 4-3A.
Early in the third quarter, South Beauregard tied the game at 21-21 on a 29-yard run by Jayden Derouen.
The Rams started the go-ahead drive in the closing seconds of the third quarter from its 20-yard line. Westlake got a crucial conversion on 4th-and-4 on an 11-yard pass from Drew Winn to Cullen Hamilton to move down to the Golden Knights’ 28-yard line. Tight end Nic Runnels put the Rams up 28-21 with a six-yard touchdown reception.
The Rams’ defense forced South Beauregard (2-5, 0-2) to turn the ball over on downs and J.J. Ross rumbled for a 39-yard touchdown to ice the game.
Ross and backfield mate Jasia Simien combined for 415 yards and four touchdowns. Ross had 28 carries for 217 yards and two scores while Simien ran for 194 yards on 19 carries and scored twice in the first quarter.
Westlake will host Iowa on Friday.
