MOSS BLUFF — Sam Houston kicker Davis Dow drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired Friday night to give the Broncos a 31-28 win over Barbe.

The win was the first over Barbe for Sam Houston (5-1, 3-0) and kept the Broncos atop the District 3-5A standings.

Dow’s field goal capped a drive that started at the Broncos 40 after Barbe (4-2, 2-1) tied the score on a 21-yard pass from Davis Meche to Chandler Ware with 1:59 left.

Bartley gained 16 yards on a run to get the Broncos into scoring position.

As the Broncos were inching their way up the field, Dow was preparing to end the game.

“When we got the ball I thought it would come down to me so I started getting ready,” he said. “It was a lot of repetition on the sideline. I was ready. I knew it was good when I hit it.”

Broncos head coach Chad Paulk said he was happy to have Dow decide the game.

“I’ve always said he is a special kicker,” Paulk said. “For him to make that kick for us to win the game for this team, for this program and this community is great.”

Bartley ran for 146 yards and threw for 211 more.

“They were trying to take away our receivers so we were able to run the quarterback,” Paulk said. “Their defensive coordinator did a great job and we played great defense as well.”

Ware made 12 catches for 227 yards and three touchdowns.

The offensive explosion that seemed inevitable before the game took a while to develop, with a penalty-filled first quarter going scoreless with 46 yards of combined offense.

Action picked up in the second half after each team scored twice to produce a 14-14 halftime tie.

Sam Houston opened the scoring on a 22-yard touchdown pass from Kyle Bartley to Dominic Myers.

Bucs defensive lineman Hayden Singleton scored on a 6-yard interception return to tie the score.

The Broncos recaptured the lead on a 14-yard strike from Bartley to Luke Yuhasz.

Barbe answered less than a minute later, with Davis Meche and Chandler Ware connecting on a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The quarter featured three interceptions, four touchdowns and 247 yards of offense.

Bartley finished the half with 171 passing yards while Meche had 83, 72 of which came in the second quarter.

The teams traded scores in the third quarter, with the Bucs scoring on a 20-yard Ware reception and Sam Houston responding with a 9-yard pass from Bartley to Alijah Mouton on a fourth down play.
